Bring Back Hope – You Still Have Options!
Uterine Cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting American women. It is estimated that 41,250 women will receive this diagnosis this year, making it the fourth most common female cancer.
Uterine cancer usually begins in the endometrium, or the lining of the uterus. If this is the origin of the cancer cells, this type of cancer is called endometrial cancer. It most commonly occurs between the ages of 60 and 70.
There are other cells in the uterus, however, that can become cancerous, such as the muscle cells (myometrial cells). This type of cancer is considered a sarcoma and is not as common as it only accounts for approximately 5% of all diagnosed uterine cancers.
Uterine cancer is often detected at an early stage because vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods or after menopause is a common symptom. If detected early, this slow-growing cancer is likely to be only confined to the uterus. Surgically removing the uterus eliminates this cancer 90% of the time. If the cancer has spread, conventional treatments are not as successful. Approximately 7,000 women die each year of endometrial cancer.
