About Lupus

Lupus or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an auto-immune disease where the immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks the body’s own healthy tissue. Other types include discoid (cutaneous), drug-induced, and neonatal. Discoid Lupus affects the skin and is characterized by a rash on the face, neck and scalp. This type does not affect internal organs and only progresses into a systemic type in less than 10% of cases.

Who Does Lupus Affect?

According to the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA), 1.2 to 2 million americans suffer from Lupus. 90% of Lupus sufferers are women between the ages of 15 and 45. Lupus more frequently occurs in African American women and is more severe. Because of these more severe symptoms they also have a higher mortality rate for Lupus. Although the disease is more common in women, men can also have the Lupus.
