Rheumatic Fever

Rheumatic Fever develops after a streptococcus (strep) bacteria infection has subsided. Group A Strep bacteria causes strep throat and in some patients also is the cause of scarlet fever, pneumonia, tonsillitis, sinusitis, and toxic shock syndrome. RF is an autoimmune disorder and inflammatory disease in which the body attacks its own tissues.  The internal attack is brought on by the bacteria and causes inflammation throughout the patient’s body. The fever is a serious complication of strep throat. Managing strep throat is the best prevention of RF.

Adults can contract rheumatic fever however it usually affects children primarily between the ages of five and 15.  Patients who experience a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and a temperature, should be checked by a medical professional for strep throat. The step throat test is a simple swab of the inside of the throat performed quickly at a doctor’s office.  Finally, managing strep throat is the best prevention of rheumatic fever.
