Behcet Syndrome

Behcet’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of blood vessels throughout the body. It causes problems in many parts of the body such as; painful mouth sores, skin blisters, swelling of parts of the eye, genital sores and swollen joints. This disease affects men twice as often as women. It usually appears in people during their 20’s, but sometimes develops in childhood..

The body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues. People that are suffering from Behcet’s syndrome, the immune system is attacking the blood vessels. The cause of the reaction is unknown, but it is often triggered by a viral infection. The disease is more frequent and severe in patients from the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia than those of European descent because the syndrome appears in these ethnic groups, it is suggested that there may be a genetic link.

Symptoms of Behcet’s Syndrome

Behcet’s syndrome is rare it can be very difficult to diagnose. Remission is common for patients with Behcet’s syndrome which adds to the difficulty of diagnosis. The most common symptoms are painful mouth sores, skin blisters, genital sores and swollen joints. Eye problems such as sensitivity and even blindness may also be associated with this disease.
