Ginger Is A Cancer Killer
It is widely understood that regular or increased consumption of fruits and vegetables is linked to having anti-cancer benefits. An excellent source of several bioactive phenolics is ginger. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties as well as antioxidants and anti-proliferative activities which indicate a promising role as a chemopreventive agent.
In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition1 in 2012, researchers found that ginger shows significant effects against prostate cancer. Prostate cancer affects 1 in 6 men in the United States.
“Whole ginger extract (GE) exerts significant growth-inhibitory and death-inductory effects in a spectrum of prostate cancer cells,” the study states. “Comprehensive studies have confirmed that GE perturbed cell-cycle progression, impaired reproductive capacity, modulated cell-cycle and apoptosis regulatory molecules and induced a caspase-driven, mitochondrially mediated apoptosis in human prostate cancer cells.”
In conclusion, ginger extract shrank prostate tumors by an average of 56%. The ginger works by blocking the cancer from reproducing which limits its ability to spread.
Researchers from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center2 found promising effects with ginger and ovarian cancer. The ginger extract caused the ovarian cancer cells to die in the lab during observation. Ovarian cancer is the most deadly form of cancer in the female reproductive system according to the American Cancer Society. Over 20,000 American women are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. 15,000 women are expected to die from ovarian cancer this year (in the USA).
In a 2007 study published by the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine,3 “Ginger inhibits growth and modulates secretion of angiogenic factors in ovarian cancer cells,” the study states. “The use of dietary agents such as ginger may have potential in the treatment and prevention of ovarian cancer.”
Could whole ginger extract be a new option instead of the horrifically toxic treatments of chemotherapy and radiation? It turns out that cancer drugs are not only severely ineffective at permanently shrinking tumors4, but they actually make tumors larger and cause death more quickly. More specifically, the cancer has been found to metastasize, meaning tumors come back in other areas of the body. The metastasizing was found to be more aggressive than the original cancer. According to scientists at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, the premium priced drugs were little more than death sentences for many patients. “Whatever manipulations we’re doing to tumors can inadvertently do something to increase the tumor numbers to become more metastatic, which is what kills patients at the end of the day,” said study author Dr. Raghu Kalluri.
Meanwhile, ginger extract has presented with nearly no side effects and has been used in many cultures for centuries. Over 17 other studies have concluded similar research on gingers anticancer benefits.
