Gastrointestinal Stromal
Tumor Treatment
If you have a GIST, call us. We can help you review the site, risk features, molecular results and treatment questions.
GIST is a sarcoma of the digestive tract. KIT, PDGFRA and other drivers can make molecular testing treatment-defining.

GIST treatment is built around resectability, recurrence risk and tumor biology
Tumor site, size, mitotic rate, rupture, margins, KIT and PDGFRA findings—and whether disease is localized, unresectable or metastatic—can change the plan.
Surgery aims to remove the tumor intact
For resectable primary GIST, surgery is central. Avoiding rupture matters. Postoperative risk assessment can guide whether adjuvant targeted therapy should be discussed.
The exact mutation can change the kinase-inhibitor pathway
Imatinib is an important first-line targeted therapy for many advanced GISTs, but specific molecular findings can affect sensitivity, dose or selection of another agent. A report that only says “KIT positive” may not answer every treatment question.
Imaging response and medication tolerance need ongoing review
- KIT and PDGFRA genotype
- Primary site and tumor size
- Mitotic rate and rupture status
- Surgical margins
- Current TKI dose and adherence
- Side effects and drug interactions

Frequently asked questions
Is GIST stomach cancer?
It may begin in the stomach, but it is a mesenchymal tumor and follows a sarcoma treatment pathway rather than the usual gastric carcinoma pathway.
Why is mutation testing important?
KIT, PDGFRA and other findings can predict sensitivity or resistance to specific targeted medicines.
Is surgery used for metastatic GIST?
Targeted systemic therapy is central; surgery may be added in selected circumstances after specialist review.
