Protect Tumor Control, Organ Function and the Future at the Same Time
Multiagent chemotherapy and surgery are central to most high-grade osteosarcoma treatment. The plan also follows response to preoperative chemotherapy, surgical margins and lung or other metastatic disease.
During chemotherapy
Monitor hydration, kidney and liver function, blood counts, infection risk, nausea, oral intake, neuropathy, hearing and cardiac exposure according to the regimen.
Around surgery
Prepare for protein needs, mobility changes, pain management, wound healing and a rehabilitation plan that respects the reconstruction.
Beyond treatment
Surveillance, cardiometabolic health, bone and muscle recovery, fertility concerns, school or work, body image and fear of recurrence belong in long-term care.

Work at the Right Level of the Problem
Integrative care is most useful when every intervention has a stated level and purpose. A strategy that supports appetite or sleep should not be presented as though it controls sarcoma.
Surgery, radiation, systemic therapy and clinical trials are matched to histology, molecular biology, site and stage.
Address nutrition, nausea, bowel function, pain, neuropathy, movement, hydration and recovery between treatments.
Evaluate sleep, protein and energy intake, metabolic health, inflammation, deconditioning, medications and avoidable exposures.
Support emotional health, family capacity, practical needs, values and decisions that make treatment worthwhile to the patient.
Build Reserve Without Pretending the Terrain Is the Tumor
For a young person especially, supportive care should preserve growth, strength, sleep, development, fertility discussions, learning, emotional health and family capacity. Supplements must be screened around methotrexate and other regimen-specific interactions.
Nourishment and body composition
Track weight change, muscle loss, protein and energy intake, hydration, digestion and laboratory clues that can alter treatment tolerance or recovery.
Movement and function
Match activity to the tumor site, fracture risk, blood counts, surgery and symptoms. Prehabilitation and rehabilitation should be specific, progressive and safe.
Sleep, stress and nervous-system load
Mindfulness, relaxation, counseling, yoga, tai chi or acupuncture may support selected symptoms when appropriate; the evidence is for symptom care, not eradication of sarcoma.
Botanicals, nutrients and interactions
Natural products can be pharmacologically active. Review bleeding risk, anesthesia, liver and kidney function, immune effects and treatment metabolism before use.

Urgent symptoms: Fever during chemotherapy, new breathing difficulty, uncontrolled vomiting, dehydration, severe pain, sudden limb instability or new neurologic symptoms require urgent evaluation.

How do I know whether a natural therapy is evidence-based?
Ask whether evidence is laboratory, animal, observational or clinical; whether it applies to this subtype and treatment; what dose was studied; and whether the claim concerns symptoms, treatment tolerance or tumor control.
