What this laboratory test evaluates

Alkaline Phosphatase
This test measures the level of alkaline phosphatase enzyme in the blood. The test is often used to diagnose liver disease or bone disorders. Moderate elevations of alkaline phosphatase may be seen in several other conditions, including Hodgkin's disease, congestive heart failure, ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, and intra-abdominal bacterial infections. Elevations are also observed during the third trimester of pregnancy.

What patients is this test right for?This test is part of the standard complete comprehensive panel (CMP) and may be recommended to screen individuals that could affect the liver, bone disorders, or those with conditions affecting the bile ducts or gallbladder.

What type of sample is required for this test?1 mL serum.
Sodium heparin (green-top) tube
Lithium heparin (green-top) tube
Administration of STRENSIQ may interfere in certain assays and may falsely elevate values. For patients receiving STRENSIQ, consideration should be given to using alternate methods.
Transport Container: Serum separator tube (SST).
Transport room temperature.
