What this laboratory test evaluates
Anti-Streptolysin O Antibody (ASO) Test
This test is used for detecting recent infections caused by streptococcal bacteria. These antibodies are produced by the immune system in response to a streptococcal infection, which is known for causing strep throat and other associated conditions. The test measures the presence of ASO antibodies, which typically increase one week after infection and reach their peak between two to four weeks. ASO levels are significant in diagnosing conditions like acute rheumatic fever and acute glomerulonephritis caused by streptococcal infections.
What patients is this test right for? This test is particularly useful for individuals suspected of having recent streptococcal infections, especially if symptoms of acute rheumatic fever or acute glomerulonephritis are present. Over 80% of patients with acute rheumatic fever and 95% of patients with acute glomerulonephritis due to streptococci show elevated ASO levels.
What type of sample is required for this test?1 mL serum.
Transport Container: Serum separator tube (SST).
Transport room temperature.

How Sunridge uses laboratory information
Sunridge considers the medical question, symptoms, history, medications, prior results, and whether the finding could change care before recommending testing. A laboratory result is not interpreted in isolation and does not establish a diagnosis by itself.
Before requesting this test
