What this laboratory test evaluates

DetailsThe Epstein-Barr Virus Early Antigen D Antibody (IgG) test is used to detect a primary infection of the Epstein-Barr virus, which is known to cause infectious mononucleosis. This condition is more common in children and young adults and usually resolves on its own. However, EBV can also lead to more serious conditions, including lymphoproliferative disorders and tumors. This test looks for IgG antibodies that target the Early Antigen D of the virus, which typically appear within a month of showing symptoms and last for 3-4 months. Persistently high levels of these antibodies may indicate that the virus is reactivating or not going away.

What patients is this test right for?This test may be recommended for individuals showing symptoms of infectious mononucleosis or for those suspected of having a reactivation or persistent EBV infection.

Symptoms of infectious mononucleosis include:• Fatigue
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Swollen spleen or liver

What type of sample is required for this test?1 mL serum. A blood draw is necessary.
