ibs-smart
Gemelli BiotechWhat this laboratory test evaluates
The American College of Gastroenterology's Clinical Guidelines for IBS recommend a rule-in strategy for diagnosing IBS. ibs-smart is highly specific in distinguishing IBS from IBD and has a high positive predictive value that allows doctors to confidently rule in IBS. Post-infectious IBS is caused by food poisoning resulting in autoimmunity. Research shows that over 60% of IBS cases with a diarrheal component (IBS-D or IBS-M) could be post-infectious. If either antibody is ‘Elevated,’ the test results can be considered positive and the patient can be confidently diagnosed with IBS. If both antibodies are ‘Not Elevated,’ the test results can be considered non-indicative. Further testing may be required in this case.
Additional test information
ibs-smart is a diagnostic blood test that measures the levels of two antibodies, anti-CdtB and anti-vinculin, known to be elevated in patients who have IBS with a diarrheal component (IBS-D and IBS-M).
Collection and processing
- Sample type: Capillary whole blood
- Fasting: No
- Estimated laboratory processing: Results should arrive 7 business days after the lab receives samples.
How Sunridge uses laboratory information
Sunridge considers the medical question, symptoms, history, medications, prior results, and whether the finding could change care before recommending testing. A laboratory result is not interpreted in isolation and does not establish a diagnosis by itself.
