What this laboratory test evaluates

LH (Luteinizing Hormone) and FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) are produced by the pituitary to stimulate the ovaries and the testicles in response to Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). LH and FSH is useful to assess amenorrheic women, ovarian reserves for women seeking fertility, screen for PCOS, menopausal status, and screening hypogonadal men. Elevations of LH and FSH are reflective of inadequate ovarian or testicular hormone production. Lower levels of LH and FSH are reflective of adequate hormone production, pituitary failure, or suppression by hormone replacement therapy.

LH and FSH measures the brain's output of hormones used to communicate with the ovaries and testicles. This is commonly used to determine if the ovaries or testicles are producing adequate hormones. This test can be used for fertility assessment, screening men with low testosterone, assessing women with no cycles, and menopause determination.
