Protein, Total and Albumin
Quest DiagnosticsWhat this laboratory test evaluates
DetailsProtein, Total and Albumin – This test measures the main proteins in the blood, albumin and globulin, to help assess overall health. Albumin makes up over half of the serum proteins. The ratio of albumin to globulin (A/G ratio) is used to check for various health conditions, though it's not disease-specific. A normal A/G ratio ranges from 0.8-2.0. Changes in this ratio can indicate different health issues, such as chronic inflammation, liver or kidney problems, or certain cancers.
What patients is this test right for? This test may be recommended for individuals showing symptoms or having conditions that could affect protein levels in the blood.
Increased Protein Symptoms/Conditions:• Chronic inflammatory diseases (e.g., TB, syphilis)
• Multiple myeloma
• Collagen disease
• Rheumatoid arthritis
Decreased Protein Symptoms/Conditions:• Liver dysfunction
• Kidney disease
• Various cancers
What type of sample is required for this test?1 mL serum. Phlebotomy is required.

How Sunridge uses laboratory information
Sunridge considers the medical question, symptoms, history, medications, prior results, and whether the finding could change care before recommending testing. A laboratory result is not interpreted in isolation and does not establish a diagnosis by itself.
