Breast-cancer tests fall into different categories. Diagnostic biomarkers such as ER, PR and HER2 help define the disease. Germline tests look for inherited variants that may affect family risk and selected treatments. Tumor genomic tests search the cancer itself for acquired alterations, while gene-expression assays estimate recurrence risk or chemotherapy benefit in specific early-stage settings. A liquid biopsy examines tumor-derived material in blood and is most useful for defined questions.
