Breast Cancer Biology · HER2-Low
HER2-low is not the same as HER2-positive. It describes lower HER2 expression that may become treatment-relevant in advanced disease, making the exact IHC report important.

Understand the treatment question
Biology
ER, PR, HER2 and the complete pathology report shape the treatment pathway.
Extent
Imaging, examination and symptoms clarify local, regional or distant disease.
History
What worked, what stopped working and what was tolerated all influence sequencing.
Treatment pathways
Surgery and radiation may be relevant for primary, local or regional disease and for selected symptomatic metastatic sites.
Endocrine therapy, HER2-directed therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, antibody-drug conjugates and mutation-directed treatment are considered according to subtype and setting.
A trial or pathology review may be especially useful when disease is uncommon, changing or resistant to prior treatment.
Natural and integrative care
Infusion therapies
Physician-directed infusion support is considered with labs, medications, organ function and goals.
Botanicals
Mistletoe, curcumin, resveratrol, silymarin and EGCG are discussed according to evidence level and formulation.
Immune context
Selected measurements may add context but are not a substitute for validated tumor biomarkers.
Emerging modality
Molecular hydrogen is included as an emerging supportive modality with early human oncology research.
A Sunridge consultation
Questions patients ask
No. It explains the decision framework; a real plan requires the complete records and clinical context.
Yes. Newly diagnosed, recurrent, metastatic and previously treated patients may request a physician review.
A closer look
HER2-low generally refers to an IHC result of 1+ or 2+ without gene amplification. It is not a separate breast-cancer subtype in the same way as classic HER2-positive disease, and a tumor may also be hormone receptor-positive or triple-negative. The category became clinically important because some antibody-drug conjugates can deliver treatment to tumors with lower HER2 expression.
Testing deserves close attention. A result can vary between the original breast tumor and a metastasis, between laboratories, and even between samples from the same person. Patients should obtain the actual IHC and ISH reports rather than relying only on a summary that says “HER2-negative.” Sunridge reviews the complete pathology timeline and uses integrative care to address symptoms, strength, recovery and treatment tolerance alongside the oncology plan.
Prepare for a Sunridge review
Before contacting the Patient Care Team, gather every HER2 IHC and ISH report, the tested tissue site, prior HER2-directed exposure, current imaging and treatment history. A concise one-page chronology is often helpful: diagnosis date, stage, major test results, treatments received, response, side effects and the questions that matter most now.
Step 1
The team can explain which reports and images are needed before a physician review.
Step 2
List the treatment, symptom, recovery and quality-of-life questions you want the consultation to address.
Step 3
Out-of-state and international patients can discuss timing, Scottsdale travel and which services require an in-person appointment.
