Studies have associated tumor-infiltrating NK cells and peripheral NK activity with treatment response or prognosis in selected cohorts. These findings support research interest but do not make every commercial NK assay a validated predictive test. Natural killer cells can recognize and damage certain stressed or abnormal cells without the same antigen-specific priming required by some other immune cells. That biology makes them an important research focus in cancer. However, the number of NK cells circulating in blood, a laboratory stimulation assay and NK cells present inside a tumor are different measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable.

A thoughtful immune review starts with a defined question. Is the concern treatment-related suppression, recurrent infection, slow recovery, nutritional depletion or broader immune context? The answer determines whether a CBC, lymphocyte-subset panel, immunoglobulins, inflammatory markers or a specialized functional assay could add useful information.
