Knowing how far along the cancer has progressed is critical in administering the proper cancer treatment. The staging system is used for most forms of cancer, except brain tumors and hematological malignancies.
The stages of cancer are divided into 4 main parts as follows:
Stage 1 cancer: Tumor(s) is smaller than 2 centimeters. Lymph Glands remain unaffected and the cancer is localized to one area.
Stage 2 cancer: Tumor(s) range from 2-5 centimeters. The lymph nodes may be affected in one or both armpits. The cancer remains localized to one area.
Stage 3 cancer: Tumor(s) are larger measuring more than five centimeters and is attached to skin or muscle. The lymph nodes or glands are most likely affected but the cancer remain localized.
Stage 4 cancer The tumor(s) can be any size. The lymph nodes or glands are affected and cancer has spread to other areas of the body resulting in a “secondary cancer”.
